I remember when I got my first PC, and was excited because they upgraded the 240mb hard drive to a massive 320mb with no extra cost!
Hard drives were really expensive, but were necessary for speed. Backing up was done on 3.5 inch floppies in those days, and took many intensive hours, not to mention huge amounts of shelf space.
Thankfully, nowadays USB (Universal Serial Bus) and the range of external hard drives available give click and forget backup possibilities with an amazingly low price. The two terabytes (2048 gigabytes) is an exceptionally large amount of space, to store films, work, photographs and music of an almost infinite amount. Over thirty thousand digital photographs (or scans of your negatives), over 2,000 hours of video or close on 50,000 hours of mp3 music files, but most likely you would use it for a mixture of all of these, together with your letters, spreadsheets and important notes. The USB interface is quick enough to stream video to and from your PC, so this unit is an ideal external device for the USB recording satellite receivers as well, giving many hours of programs and films you can watch at a later date.
The Seagate is a well made unit, with a tough black plastic case sporting the logo on the front with a green led access light, giving a clean, minimalistic feel. The rear accepts the power connector and USB plug and that’s it, except for a locking aperture to fit a Kensington Lock (K-Lock) should you have to leave it unattended in an office for example.
Almost silent in operation, my unit is positively drowned out by the super quiet power supply in my PC, so it is certainly recommended for the office (or even nursery!) environment.
This is an ideal extra hard drive which is totally transportable, Plug and play, hot-swappable between devices and can be used for backing up or transfer from home to office. My advice would be to use this as a backup device, storing your essential memories and critical data here as well as your PC’s hard drive, and guess what, you’ll most like have loads of room left to fill it with whatever you want!
